If I say “a romantic, kid free break” you probably don’t immediately think Iceland, but maybe you should! A romantic break to Iceland, the land of fire and ice, especially in winter when blanketed in snow, is definitely romantic. Imagine falling asleep under the stars, floating in hot springs, eating delicious food and hopefully seeing the Northern Lights and I think you have a pretty perfect romantic break away.
What could be more romantic than cuddling up with your partner under the Northern Lights? Many hotels offer wake-up calls if the lights show up and several companies offer tours to view the Northern Lights on land or by sea. The lights are never a guarantee, as they are an elusive phenomenon that requires darkness, clear skies, and solar activity. They’re only visible in the colder, darker months (September to April) making winter the perfect time to visit. So cross your fingers for clear skies, wrap up warm, and don’t forget your camera.
Or, for a completely different experience, head to the natural Secret Lagoon (pictured above) where you can float in the hot springs late into the evening for Northern Lights watching.
Of course for the easiest way to travel around and make the most of your trip is by making the most of car rental in Iceland. This will enable you to explore all the romantic destinations in this post.
No trip to Iceland is complete without a trip to the spectacular Blue Lagoon. To be honest it’s these pictures that make me want to visit. The ice blue lagoon nestled amongst the dark landscape and rising steam looks magical! The water temperature makes it perfect for lazing around in and soaking up the tranquil atmosphere for a romantic hour, or more!
Reykjavic may be tiny – it has a population of just 120,000 – but it has more than its fair share of romantic restaurants and bars to while away the long, cold nights by candlelight. And, during the day, don’t forget to get the lift to the top of the Hallgrímskirkja church for 360 degree views of the capital.
Whilst visiting Iceland there are plenty of memory-making experiences to have together. Watch an erupting Geysir, where the white column of boiling water forms a beautiful half bubble before it goes up as super-heated steaming water where it can reach the height of 15-30 m. The most active Geysir, currently, is Strokkur, an energetic spouting hot spring that goes up roughly every 5 minutes.
Visit a waterfall. Gullfoss waterfall is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland. A thundering multi-tiered waterfall that looks as if the earth is absorbing into the waterfall as you approach it. A bit farther afield, there’s Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall you can walk behind. See the black sand beach of Reynisfjara with its unique basalt rock formations, and take a boat ride amongst the icebergs at glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón.
For a room, ok, bubble with a view check out Buubble – The 5 million star hotel. All the bubbles have a transparent upper half or are fully transparent, so if the aurora is dancing you will have a private show. It’s definitely romantic!
