The protein in breast milk and the first 1000 days

When I became a parent I quickly realised that you suddenly have so many different things to worry about. Feeding my baby was one of them, but my baby getting the right amount of protein for appropriate growth wasn’t something that I can say really crossed my mind. I exclusively breast fed my second and third children until they were one, apart from weaning. Even though I was on a limited diet when feeding Ava (dairy and soya free). I still knew that my breast milk would be giving her what she needed.

Having struggled to breastfeed my first child I decided during my second pregnancy to read more on the subject. Even now I still find it amazing that breast milk changes depending on the weather. Which is why you don’t need to give an exclusively breast fed baby any water on a hot day. The protein in breast milk also changes to meet your babies growth needs – helping to build a nutritional foundation for life. More protein for the fast growth in the early months and less for later on when the growth slows down. SMA® Nutrition have developed a useful infographic which helps to explain.

I can remember looking at my 6 month old babies ready for weaning, thinking ‘I did that’. I grew them from a tiny seed to this sitting, gurgling, happy baby. It’s still amazing!

  7. Amazing how the human body works really 🙂 I didn’t manage to feed my eldest myself, he was on mixed formula and expressed milk, so I was so happy things worked out with my youngest and he fed for 6 months.

  8. I do think that breast milk is wonderful and the way nature works is awesome! I wish I’d been able to breastfeed Lily for longer so I wouldn’t have had to worry so much! xx

  9. I only breastfed my son for about 2 weeks before moving on to formula, but then fed my daughter for 13 months. I’m pretty fascinated by the way breastfeeding works and how our milk adapts to the baby’s needs, it’s amazing! x
