The return of Buddy. Elf on the Shelf

I’m so excited that it’s almost time for Buddy to return. He arrived halfway through December last year (thanks to royal mail for loosing the first one) and the boys (and me) were so excited. We have the original boy elf. It comes with the story book which helps to introduce the concept to children.

The idea is that Santa has chosen you and has sent a scout elf to watch over the house. The elf flies back every night to report to santa wether you have been naughty or nice. It also reports acts of kindness which I really played on. My eldest was ever so helpful! Each night when he comes back to the house he lands in a different place. The book explains that the elf looses his magic if he is touched which helps older children believe he is moving by himself. In the story book it tells you to give your elf a name. We had recently watched the film Elf, which is why they came up with the name Buddy.

The fun bit (or nightmare) for the adults of elf on the shelf is getting creative with what the elf has been up to every night. Every morning the boys would rush about the house in excitement looking for Buddy. Last year I thought it would be really easy to think of lots of things for the elf. In reality I found it more difficult. On more than one occasion, I suddenly realised at 11pm when I was all warm in bed that I had forgotten to move the elf. He was swiftly moved, accompanied with a few swear words! This year I ‘plan’ on being more organised and have created a Pinterest board to help me.

Buddy is going to return this year with a Christmas themed breakfast.

There is still time to get an Elf if you want to join in this year. You can join in on twitter and Instagram with #elfontheshelf. I can’t wait 🙂
