MAMA Academy: Trust your instincts!

MAMA Academy has launched this week and I was really keen to get involved. I’m pleased and excited to say that I have become a MAMA Academy Ambassador.

MAMA Academy is a registered charity in the UK working alongside The Royal College of Midwives and are committed to promoting Mums awareness of a healthy pregnancy and reducing baby loss. They aim to do this through educating and empowering Mums, providing clear, non complicated information on when they need to ‘call a midwife’ to discuss any concerns.

Mothers instinct will assist you in caring for your unborn child and we will provide you with even more to give your baby the best chance of arriving safely into the world.
This topic is close to my heart after my most recent pregnancy. You would think it being my third pregnancy that I would have been an expert and flown through it. It was however my most complicated, anxious and stressful pregnancy out of the three. Throughout my pregnancy I had experience of bleeding, lack of fundal growth, being at risk of premature labour and changes in babies movements along with the gut feeling at the end that something wasn’t right.
I love this poster. It highlights straight away reasons to call your midwife. There are two that I relate to the most ‘Any change in your baby’s movement pattern’ and ‘Mothers instinct that something isn’t right’. You can read about my birth story here and how reduced movements and that gut instinct in my case indicated a problem. I knew that something wasn’t right. I had a gut feeling that the change in movements was something to be worried about and I’m so glad that I trusted this instinct and contacted the midwives. I think it’s really important that Mums are encouraged to not be afraid or worried that they are wasting people’s time. To not be embarrassed and to feel empowered to trust these instincts and backed with knowledge to know that they will be taken seriously. In my experience the midwives always said it was best to get checked and were very nice and reassuring. You can read about monitoring movements from 24 weeks and change in movements here. It explains what to look for and when it would be advisable to contact a midwife.

It is important to monitor your baby’s movements during pregnancy. Although feeling a reduction in your baby’s movements could be nothing to worry about, it could also be a vital warning sign that your baby is unwell.

If you are pregnant have a look at the wellbeing wallets, they are great to keep your notes in and a good way of helping to support the charity.
