Sleep deprivation is slowly killing my life!

10 months in to sleep deprivation and with no end in sight it is slowly killing parts of my life. I posted a while back about some of the crazy sleep deprived things I have done. This is the more serious side of sleep deprivation.

sleep deprivation

My relationship with James

As the tiredness is affecting us both we are both not making an effort. We end up sitting on the sofa in the evenings in silence, on days together we don’t have the energy to do anything. Affection is down to the bare minimum and we are snappy at each other. We planned a date night and when it couldn’t happen instead of doing something else we went to bed to sleep!

My relationship with my children

I’m a pretty patient person but my patience gets worn away very quickly the more tired I am. I don’t have the energy to do things with them and can’t concentrate on playing with them. All the little fun things that I could do with them I don’t as everything else takes longer. I end up letting them do easy things like play on the PlayStation and cook easy meals.

The House

We still have boxes to unpack from when we moved. I put a load of washing on then forget it is there and have to do it again. I’m constantly thinking about and or tidying and cleaning and it doesn’t get any better as I don’t have the energy to do it.

My friendships

I don’t remember to message people back or have the energy to plan and organise meeting up. The thought of going out in the evening when I know I’m going to be really tired is not appealing.

Myself

I don’t take care of myself, not taking my make up off, not having the energy to straighten my hair after I wash it. I can’t be bothered to make myself look nice which in turn affects my relationship with James. I crave sugary things like fat coke and caffeine which I know don’t help how tired I feel. I suppose I should look into supplements that will help me to sleep better, so that I can start to focus on other elements of my life. CBD products are very popular for other people that have sleep issues, for example. Many friends have suggested I look at review pages like Cfah.org and many more to decide what type of CBD gummies will work best for helping my sleep pattern.

Reading this back it’s all very depressing. I’m happy really and wouldn’t change my baby girl for anything, apart from the lack of sleep!

I remember sleep deprivation well. Although it was a really long time ago, the first 6 weeks with my twins were the worse in my life where sleep is concerned. The twins were fed 2 hourly and they woke up alternate hours. After 2 weeks of this I was like a zombie.

  2. I totally know how you feel!I’m not sleep deprived anymore but still feel knackered between work, cleaning and breaking up kiddie fights lol x #picknmix

    • Yeah I don’t know how I’m going to cope back at work this week! Although I will have was fights to break up or maybe I won’t depending on my new class x

  3. I can totally relate to all of this. It’s incredible what the lack of sleep does to us. Fingers crossed sleep crosses your path soon – can’t wait for it to visit me #picknmix xx

I remember weeks like this, you just feel like giving up. But then next week will suddenly get better and your mood will pick up x #picknmix

My youngest still wants regular night feeds at a year, as breastfed I haven’t had a single night of unbroken sleep in a year! Oh well – they’re not like this forever. When they’re teenagers, they’ll probably never be awake! #picknmix

    • Ava is breastfed too and still wakes up for regular feeds in the night. I can’t remember my last stretch of decent sleep! True it won’t be forever! X

  6. I don’t miss those days. The first truly happy moment in a parent’s life happens when their little one sleeps through the night for the first time

  7. So true – my daughter is 15 months and still doesn’t sleep through the night it is such a killer. After bad nights I find my memory is awful and I hate that it can make me grumpy. I hope it improves for you soon x

  9. Emma's Mamma says:

I feel your pain. Emma only started sleeping through properly at around 11 months and it made such a huge difference. I don’t miss that haze I used to live in. Hopefully it’ll get better soon for you x #PicknMix

Oh i remember Elliott went through this phase too – they do come out of it so dont think its the end of the world! Such a lovely read! Suz x Beauisblue.com

    • She’s always been like it :/ although she is starting to nap better so maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel 🙂 x

  11. Ohhh you poor things. I can relate to what you’ve written, but not for 10 months – eek! Thank god I had my family, I used to go to my parents and beg them or my siblings to have Tyler for one night so I could sleep! It worked just to get a break. Hopefully yours will sleep through very soon in the future though, fingers crossed. Sabrina xx #picknmix

I could have written this myself! Sleep deprivation is affecting all areas of my life at the moment. I am now doing a part time job on top of my daughter and my blog and usually get home at 1am only to be up at 6am with Evie. Only she’s up in the night at the moment too all the time. I don’t remember the last time I had more that 2 or 3 hours kip. It really does affect every area of your life doesn’t it. I’m emotional, really not patient, forgetful and much much more. The time it affected me the most was when I went food shopping, got to the check out and couldn’t remember the pin number I’ve had on my card for 10 years!!! 🙁

I really hope you get some sleep soon. It’s nice to know that it won’t be forever!!! x

    • Oh no, I’ve had a total mind blank before when logging into my online bank using the same pin I’ve had for years. It had totally gone! Hope it gets better for you soon. I’m back to work this week :/ xx

I remember it well as a new parent and the thing that kept me going was the knowledge that it wouldnt be forever. Well now they are grown, I have developed insomnia so i guess now it is 🙁 #picnmix

  14. Jenny Eaves says:

Oh, I hope you get some sleep too, I know how much it sucks. Neither of our boys are sleepers and it took O until 3 years old to sleep through the night. I hope A starts sleeping longer before 3!! I think most parents understand, they never care about how your clothes/house/yourself look like, they know sleep is not something you tend to get much of! 🙂 x

  15. Julie S. says:

Sleep deprivation has definitely changed my personality. I’m working on being less quick to snap at people. It is hard though, but worth it to have our sweet little one.

  16. Alison says:

You have my sympathy. Sleep deprivation is horrendous, and I have noticed the days after I get a particularly bad night’s sleep an increase in negative intrusive thoughts. All I can say is hang in there, because it will get better. #picknmix

  17. Becky says:

I totally empathise – it’s horrible. I don’t think parenthood would be half as hard if babies slept through the night from birth! I’m reassured by the fact that I’m on my second and final baby so I just keep thinking “I won’t have to go through this again!” #picknmix

  18. I understand pretty well how you feel !! It really sucks, isn’t it? My 1 year old does sleep through the night but she has days that she wakes up at 5:30 am and it is really tiring. Also when she is not well she can wake up several times and you ended up awake all night and the next day you are a zombie! And also when you have more than one child it always happens that they pass to each other their illnesses and as soon you finish with one you have to deal with the other one so you can spend a week with no sleep at all!!! 🙁 I hope your situation changes soon and you can get some sleep. Thanks for sharing, xx
