5 Things I love and hate about moving house.

We moved house almost a couple of weeks ago now, the 3rd time in just over 2 years (the joys of renting). I’m hoping that this house will be a longer stay for us as the thought of moving again anytime soon fills me with fear. This house feels more like us, so I’m already starting to feel at home more than I ever did in the last house. House hunting can be stressful. It’s important to head to websites like https://www.sofi.com/home-affordability-calculator/ to check out your financial situation when looking for a house. Just input five quick numbers, and they will tell you what house prices are in your budget!

Due to all the moves I’m becoming a bit of a pro at it, although James may disagree.  There are a few things I have come to love and hate about moving house.

Things I love and hate about moving house

I love the excitement of moving to a new place, counting down the sleeps and looking forward to a fresh start.

I hate leaving the old house behind, the memories and the familiarity, it always makes me feel a bit nostalgic.

I love that moving makes you de clutter. That bag of clothes you never wear may eventually get sorted out.

I hate de cluttering those last little bits, the bits you are unsure whether to keep or not and have no clear home.

love that moving house means I organise things like my clothes, toys and paperwork. I always feel much better when I know where everything is.

I hate how long it takes to do and that point where you feel like you should never have started.

I love being able to put everything in a new place in a new house all neat and tidy and organised.

I hate it when the furniture doesn’t fit, curtains are the wrong size and the point where you feel like you are never going to get everything sorted.

I love the feeling of achievement you get after moving house. When you sit down and put your feet up with preferably a large glass of something alcoholic.

I hate how tired you are and how long it takes for you to reach that moment. To be able to reach the sofa and unpack the glasses can be a challenge.

We are a lot more sorted than we were this time two weeks ago and my legs are recovering after moving everything ourselves (three storey, ouch). However there are still boxes to unpack and items to find homes for. If we are lucky will we have it perfect by the time we have to move again!

What do you love and hate about moving?

I love a newly decluttered house too but it never stays that way for long. I hate that things get lost and packing and that there is always something the kids prefer about the old house.

  2. We moved house with a 2 year old and 8 week old baby, it was tough! I look back and not sure how I managed it. But it was worth it, once we were in and everything was sorted. I too love finding new places for our things and they can sometimes feel like new again, in a new home. I also love shopping for new things…oop! I hope you will be very happy in your new home with new memories x

Ooh, I’m dying to move house right now, as that would mean our house was sold and we were moving onto a brighter future! This post has definitely reminded me that it wouldn’t actually be as amazing as I’m imagining though, so thanks for bringing me back to reality!
Hope you’re all settled in at the new house now 🙂

  4. So true! We seemed to have moved every couple of years over the last ten, you do get a bit of a pro in time! My husband was only saying the other day he’s starting to get itchy feet – we have no intention of moving but I think we’re in the habit now…

  5. I agree, it’s great that moving makes you declutter and organise everything. It’s just getting started with it all that’s hard. We did this when we moved six years ago and although we aren’t moving again (yet!) I desperately need to declutter again, it’s crazy how you accumulate stuff. #picknmix

  6. Last time I moved I moved country too. It felt strange leaving England in a large truck with all my belongings in the back. Being super organised I had moved everything according to room to make it easier. I agree that it is a great opportunity to declutter and starting over can be cathartic too, Hope you are well settled in!

I hate moving! I also rent so staying in one place for too long doesn’t really seem to happen!
I do agree its great to be able to declutter and have a reason to do so, but I’d love to be able to stay in one place.

  8. I definitely enjoy the fact that moving house forces you to get rid of old clutter. I always feel much better after throwing a load of stuff away for some reason! #PicknMix

  9. We moved into our brand new house 6 years ago now. It was our first house together so we didnt have much to fill it up with. I am dreading it when we do move in a couple of years time due to the amount of stuff we have xx

We’ve moved around a lot too as we rent and it does keep you organised without too much clutter. That said we do have boxes which have moved with us several times now without being opened! #picknmix

  11. Emma says:

we are in the process of moving. I don’t think we will complete until august tho :/ I too am looking forward to a major declutter! #picknmix

  12. Kirsty says:

I moved house nearly 2 years ago now and gosh I don’t miss it. That sense of achievement does make it worth while but there is no easy way round moving. It is very stressful #picknmix

  13. Life as Mum says:

I totally agree. I have moved house 3 years in the past nearly 5 years and hated it. We have finally bought the house we are living in now, so we don’t plan to move again for a good 10+ years

  14. We moved in October but were exceedingly lucky in that we didn’t have a chain and could move out gradually while our old house completed. It was still ridiculously stressful though (hubby had appendicitis the week before and couldn’t lift anything!) and I don’t want to have to do it again any time soon! That said, it is definitely good to have a major declutter! #PickNMix

  15. I agree – it’s a great sense of achievement, everything is tidy & I always throw out loads when we move! We haven’t moved in years so the house is full of clutter now! #picknmix x

  16. We’ve moved three times and I never want to do it again. Although I sometimes think we should move just so I am forced to have a serious declutter! #Picknmix

  17. Getting rid of clutter is a definite bonus. However, I think the stress is very negative so I would hate to have to move frequently. I hope you all enjoy being in your new home and have a great Easter 🙂 xx #PickNMix

  18. Laura says:

Congrats on your new house 😀 I find moving so stressful – although the last time was five years ago and we ended up moving 3 days before our wedding! Wasn’t planned that way but had to go with it. It is exciting though of course x #picknmix

  19. Nothing beats a de clutter and the sense of achievement it brings. Happy Easter X #pixknmix

  20. Fern says:

I moved last time with a 20 month old & 6 week old, I’ve got pics of little midge on a bare floor (total newbuild & part of it was still a building site so no carpets or anything) huddled up in OHs jumper because we’d not unpacked her bed or blankets! I love moving though.

  21. Bread says:

Getting rid of the clutter is the only thing I like about moving house and I’ve found I can do that without moving lol. I rent too and hope to be in this house for a good long while cause I can’t afford to move – mentally or financially!

  22. Silly Mummy says:

We’re in the process of trying to sort out a move currently. I hate moving. I just hate all the hassle & stress of it! #picknmix

  23. Midgie says:

I am definitely not a fan of the packing and unpacking when it comes to moving but its really really nice to be able to start again somewhere new that is clean and shiny! I quite like renting to be honest, I like the freedom and how easy it makes moving!

  24. I’m a weirdo who loves moving houses! I’ve lived in at least 17 different houses/flats in my almost 33 (eek) years on the planet! This house has been the longest I’ve lived anywhere so far at 4 years 🙂

    Stevie xx

  25. Oh this is great as we are moving at the end of this year and its the first time we will have moved since having Mia so I’m dreading it! I love having things where I like them so I’m not looking forward to working out where things need to go again but I’m looking forward to de cluttering the whole house!! 🙂

    #PicknMix

  26. We moved twice last year in the space of 3 months, it was soooo stressful! Hoping that this time round we’ll be in our house slightly longer! x #picknmix

  27. Oh lord I know the feeling – we’ve moved a lot over the last few years. Its nice when you are settled but the actual moving processes takes days/ weeks and can be soul destroying! I do agree though that the biggest benefit is the decluttering, you just sit there and think – do I really need this sh*t, like really do I? Nope, in the bin it goes.
Hope you are enjoying your new home! #picknmix

  28. Congratulations on the house move! We moved last October and I still haven’t unpacked everything! #TheList

  29. Savannah says:

Moving can really be such a bittersweet experience. The decluttering is my absolute favorite part of moving. You get a complete re-do, and that’s so nice sometimes. I know moving can also be one of the most stressful things on the planet. <3 #TheList
